RTÉ Two is universally available throughout the island of Ireland on the VHF and UHF bands, and is also available via satellite (DVB-S) to Irish subscribers of Sky Digital. There had been much debate in the 1970s about the choice of second channel. There were 3 options open to the government at the time, an independent commercial service, the re-transmission of BBC1 Northern Ireland or a second RTÉ channel. It was finally decided that RTÉ should run the new service.
