IN making up the notes for this edition of Mie. De la Se:èglz'ère it was necessary to bear in mind that the play has been recom mended for the courses preparatory to the N ev_v England colleges. In deciding on the general nature and scope of the commentary I have been especially in¿uenced by the General Remarks of Mr. Grandgent, ia his Synopsis of the F reach and German Instruction in the Boston High Schools (school Document No. 14, a pamphlet which ought to receive the careful attention of every instructor of elementary and secondary classes. In the matter of details I was much aided by the edition of Mlle. De la Sezjglz'ère by K. A. Martin Hartmann (leipzig, F or many valuable suggestions and criticisms I am indebted to Mr. S. W. Chry, of D. C. Heath Co., and to Prof. Cohn, of Harvard University, to the latter particularlyïn regard to the literary and sociologioel imp6ft of the play. The defini tions of legal terms have been revised by Bradford W. Hitchcock, Esq., of New York City.
