Surrounding the carbon core will be found a dense mass of carborundum crystals, and outside of this a thin layer of carbo rundum which has been thoroughly reduced. But not crystallized. This is sold as a refractory material and is known as carborundum fire sand.
A similar resistance furnace is used for making artificial graphite.
