Solomon's Temple, also known as the First Temple, was, according to the Hebrew Bible, the first temple of the ancient religion of the biblical Israelites in Jerusalem and originally constructed by King Solomon on the hill called Zion in Jerusalem. It was designed to house the Ark of the Covenant, and to serve the Israelites as a central place where they could worship the God of Israel. According to the Bible, it functioned as a religious focal point for worship and the sacrifices known as the korbanot in ancient Judaism. Completed in 960 BCE, it was destroyed by the Babylonians in 586 BCE. The temple was reconstructed between 516 BCE and 70 CE and this structure is commonly called the Second Temple. The construction is described in the Book of Ezra and the rebuilding was authorized by Cyrus the Great of Persia and ratified by Darius the Great of Persia. This building was destroyed by the Roman Empire in 70 CE during the First Jewish-Roman War by the general Titus, who later became emperor. Jewish eschatology commonly includes the belief that a Third Temple will be built.
