The Law of Network Externalities predicts that the value of a network node grows with the addition of further nodes to the network. If you and only one of your friends have email, then it's not of very high value. If all your friends have email, then it's worth a lot more to you. And if pretty much everyone has email, then you can't afford to be without it. Together with dirt-cheap silicon, this has fueled the explosive growth of the Inter net and the Web.
