Named after counties in Kentucky and Tennessee, she was the only U.S. Naval vessel to bear the name.Originally laid down as LST-825 on 2 October 1944 by the Missouri Valley Bridge and Iron Company, Evansville, Indiana; launched 11 November; sponsored by Mrs. John Spindler; commissioned at New Orleans on 8 December with Lieutenant Henry V. Hartsell in command.
