O knihe

Dear Reader, what is to become of us - of me, Sophie? Thus begins Sophie's second journal, written two years later. She is now fifteen years old, and the Civil War is three years old. Her first journal, Sophie's War, tells how she and her family live in constant danger as Unionists in the hill country of Texas, a state that has left the Union and joined the Confederacy. Now, as the war goes on, all the able men in Comfort have been forced to leave and fight on one side or the other, including Sophie's papa and her true love, Eduard. Sophie and other women must protect themselves from vigilantes and hostile Indians. All the able men in Sophie's village in the Texas Hill Country have left to fight in the Civil War on one side or the other. As German immigrants, most of them are Unionists, including Sophie's papa and her true love, Eduard. Now, Sophie and other women must protect themselves from vigilantes and hostile Indians. They face many challenges. When Sophie finds a Confederate deserter in their barn, she helps him but fears for his future, since vigilantes roam the land, hanging deserters and Unionists. Then Indians steal her beloved horse, Pegasus, and later seize her little brother, Willie. Can Sophie and her family survive? Will the war ever end? Will Papa and Eduard return? The historical background of the story is fact but not widely known. German immigrants living in the Texas Hill Country during the Civil War were highly educated idealists who could not abide slavery. Nor did they want their country divided. Thus, they were called traitors and persecuted.
