O knihe

Considered by many critics second only to Shakespeare in the ranks of Elizabethan dramatists, Ben Jonson (1572?-1637) was a master of plot, language and characterization. Perhaps the most learned playwright of his day, Jonson`s erudition permeated his work, which exerted a strong influence on the playwrights of the later Jacobean era as well as on dramatists of the Restoration, 18th and 19th centuries. Volpone, a bitter, satiric comedy in blank verse, is one of his finest plays.
First performed in 1606 and published in 1607, Volpone is set in Italy. It concerns a wealthy, lecherous old man who feigns a mortal illness in order to solicit bribes from greedy acquaintances who hope to inherit his fortune. Many complexities of plot and connivance ensue, but in the end, the guilty parties are exposed and punished. The moral: mischief undoes itself. Cleverly constructed and remarkably entertaining, Volpone still delights after nearly four centuries.
