Given the tragic outcome of affairs at the ancient manor of Wuthering Heights, this is a love story that is at odds with the 'storybook ending' that we might associate with the romance genre, Valentine's Day, and the like. At the time, a reviewer wrote that Brontë's book described "brutal cruelty, and semi-savage love." The women: "tantalising, and terrible." The men: "indescribable out of the book itself."
