Authors Françoise Kirkman, a Paris trained artist, and Jerry Di Vecchio, a food editor for four decades, worked together at Sunset magazine where they produced numerous popular children's cooking and crafts stories. Both now write for other magazines and books.

Their French-American connection and Cleo, a real pet raccoon, inspired this story.
